Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities busted out the sticks on Tuesday afternoon at John O'Donnell Stadium, exploding for an 11-4 win over the Lansing Lugnuts at John O'Donnell Stadium. -- Jared Schweitzer and Jaime Landin each collected three hits, two doubles, and three RBI in the win.
Quad Cities (17-13, 55-44) registered a season-high six doubles in the win, bouncing back from an 11-10 loss on Monday night that lasted 16 innings while spanning 5 hours and 31 minutes. Lansing (18-13, 53-47) split the current series with the Swing, but Quad Cities notched a win in the season-series, five games to three.
Lansing jumped on the scoreboard first, rallying for three runs on five hits against Swing starter Clayton Mortensen in the opening frame. Matt Lane's base hit to center plated the first run with one out, and there were two away when Paul Franko and Jonathan Baksh each delivered RBI-singles for the 3-0 lead.
But the Swing rallied to overtake the Lugnuts with a series of doubles. Landin doubled with one away in the second inning and scored on a single to left by Antone DeJesus. In the bottom of the third Tony Cruz slapped a two-base hit down the right field line with one out and scored when Steven Hill followed with a double of his own. After a walk to Nick Derba, Landin ripped his second double of the game to left-center, scoring both Hill and Derba to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead.
The Swing never relinquished that lead, as Armando Carrasco (3-1) earned the win out of the bullpen. The side-arming righty tossed three hitless innings, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced and striking out four.
In the bottom of the seventh, a seven-run explosion blew the game wide open as Quad Cities sent 11 men to the plate. Hill and Derba sparked the rally with consecutive singles and Landin drove in his third run of the game with an RBI-groundout. Daryl Jones followed with a single, and an errant pickoff throw to first allowed Derba to cross the plate, while two consecutive walks loaded the bases before DeJesus was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Schweitzer put the finishing touches on the rally by drilling a three-run double to left-center, and later scored on a groundout for an 11-3 advantage.
The Lugnuts tacked on another run in the ninth, but it was far too little and far too late in the 11-4 loss.
Mortensen overcame a rough start to turn in a solid outing on Sunday, leaving with the lead after four innings but failing to figure into the decision. After allowing three runs on five singles in the first, the 36th overall pick in the 2007 draft retired eight of the last 10 batters he faced, striking out three along the way.
