Northern Colorado Owlz News Release

The Idaho Falls Chukars completed the sweep on a windy Sunday afternoon taking the final game from the Orem Owlz 10-9.

Repetition was the name of the game for the Owlz as they once again drew first blood, but a big inning for the Chukars snatched the lead away.

Travis Witherspoon scored in the fourth thanks to an RBI single by Brandon Decker with the bases loaded and no outs, but the Owlz would leave the bases juiced as two strikeouts and a pop fly ended the innings. Orem cruised until the fifth when things got dicey as a fielders choice, a hit by pitch, and a walk loaded the bases with two outs. After a double, 2 walks, a single and a wild pitch, the Chukars plated six and took the lead 6-1, all two outs.

Orem left ten stranded on the afternoon.

Both teams added a couple more, and heading into the eight, Idaho Falls had a three run lead. In the top half of the eight, the Owlz took flight.

A walk and a base hit put runners on second and third for the Owlz with no outs. Michael Sodders hit an RBI ground out, scoring Wes Hatton from third and moving Rolando Gomez over to third. After a lineout by Hapton Tignor, back to back triples by Andrew Heid and Travis Witherspoon tied the score at nine.

The score remained tied heading into the tenth inning. Relief pitcher Dale Cornstubble, normally a catcher, came into the game for the Chukars looking to get his first career win in his first career appearance. After a single, two walks and a pop out, Decker came to the plate with the bases loaded but grounded into the inning ending 4-6-3 double play.

The tenth would be all the Chukars needed as Travis Jones singled to left scoring Yowill Espinal from second. The Owlz, for the second straight night, lost by a one run and for the third straight night had double digit strikeouts, finishing with 12 on the game.

Over the last two games, both teams have combined for 40 runs and 59 hits.

A win by Ogden Sunday afternoon clinched the second half title for the Raptors and now the second playoff spot in the southern division will be decided by the wild card. Orem holds a game and a half lead in the wild card race over the Casper Ghosts.

Orem will play their last two home games against the first place Ogden Raptors starting Monday. First pitch is at 7:05.
