Walla Walla Sweets News Release

Gresham, OR- The Walla Walla Sweets (16-12) beat the Gresham GreyWolves (10-15) in game one of the series 5-3 on Sunday afternoon. The game marked the start of the second half for Walla Walla.

The Sweets jumped out in front in the third inning on an RBI ground out by Jarren Duran (Long Beach State) that scored Connor Doyle (San Diego).

Walla Walla pushed home two more runs in the fourth inning on a suicide squeeze by Ben Baird (Washington) with runners on second and third. After the runner from third scored easily, Cole Rutherford (Cornell) knocked the ball out of the catcher's glove sliding in to home, scoring from second to make it 3-0 Sweets.

In the sixth, Baird bounced into a fielder's choice to the second baseman with the bases loaded to score another run for Walla Walla.

The GreyWolves found the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth and then after Rutherford knocked another run in for the Sweets in the eighth on a sacrifice fly, Gresham came back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Sweets held on for a 5-3 win on Kyle Narahara's (Cal State Monterey Bay) seventh save of the season.

Jackson Weeg (Emory) improved to 5-0 with five innings of shutout baseball. He is the only 5-0 pitcher in the West Coast League so far this year.

The Sweets and the GreyWolves will play again tomorrow on the fourth of July at 7:05 P.M. The Sweets are expected to turn to Chris Murphy (San Diego) on the mound for the series win.
