Bells Ring in Holiday Weekend with Win
July 3, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bellingham Bells News Release
Bellingham used a three run first inning to take the early lead over the Kitsap Bluejackets (7-18), that they would never relinquish, en route to a 6-1 victory for the Bells' third straight win.
Bellingham got on the board in the first. Andru Cardenas reached on a single to lead off the ballgame and moved to second a walk by David Banuelos two batters later. Cardenas came into score on a wild pitch with Jake Vieth at the plate, and Vieth smoked a single that plated Banuelos. Danny Casals and Austin Shenton each singled to load the bases for Gunnar Schubert. Schubert delivered for the Bells, slapping a single into left field that brought home Banuelos. Bellingham led 3-0 after one inning.
The Bells padded their advantage in the sixth. Banuelos began the threat by doubling down the left field line. Banuelos came into score when Casals hit a ground ball to third that was thrown away by Kitsap third baseman Jack Stronach. Bellingham led 4-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
Jon Olsen (1-2) earned his third start of the season, and UCLA product was fantastic, fanning seven batters in six and a third innings on the bump allowing only one run. Jeff Gelinas was also splendid, punching out four batters in one and two thirds innings on the hill.
Bellingham capped the scoring in the ninth. Shane Hanon singled and moved to second on a Carednas single. Chase Strumpf cleared the bases with a two RBI double, increasing the Bells lead to 6-1 heading to the bottom of the ninth. Gonzaga Bulldog Sam Hellinger tossed a scoreless ninth inning to shut the door for the Bells' 12th win of the 2016 campaign.
The Bells return home on Sunday, July 3rd for the first game of a three game set against the Cowlitz Black Bears, featuring fireworks after the final pitch. First pitch will be thrown a 7:05, with pre-game coverage starting at 6:35 with Tom Prizeman on https://network1sports.com/station/KBAI and on your radio dial at 930 AM.
