Walla Walla Sweets News Release
Klamath Falls, OR- Walla Walla left Klamath Falls with their head held high after a 6-1 win that capped off a series victory over the Gems. The manager for the Sweets, Frank Mutz, was proud of his club because of the fact that they played a "complete game" through all the facets of the game.
The Sweets got on the board quickly in the top of the first inning for the third consecutive game. After Jon Hechtner was hit by the first pitch of the ballgame, Kyle Dozier singled on the next pitch and Parker Coss powered a single up the middle that scored Hechtner. Kyle Nixon then walked to load the bases and Connor Kopach grounded into a double play that allowed Coss to cross the plate. That made the score 2-0 after the first.
Another run would be added by Walla Walla in the second as Juan Gamez led off the inning with a walk and Matt Whitney reached on an error. That put runners on the corners for Sweets and Gamez stole home on a double steal. When the throw went down to second, Gamez took off for the plate and just beat the throw from the Gems' second baseman Harrison Ramey on a head-first slide.
The lead would stay at 3-0 for the Sweets until the sixth when they would add a little insurance. Hechtner walked with one out and Dozier doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Hechtner scored on a wild pitch and Dozier moved up to third. Coss then knocked him in on a ground out to short to give the Sweets a 5-0 lead.
The Gems found the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Jordan Abernathy that scored Brett Binning.
Walla Walla would grab the run right back in the seventh as Trevin Haseltine blooped a single into shallow center to start the inning. The new pitcher for the Gems, Josh Overstreet, balked three times and that allowed Haseltine's pinch runner, Cody Sporrer, to score to make the score 6-1.
The MVP of the series was without a doubt Kyle Dozier who finished 8-11 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. He is currently riding a six game hitting streak.
The Sweets travel back home tonight for a day off before a three game set that starts Tuesday versus Wenatchee.
