Medford Rogues News Release
MEDFORD, OR - What started out looking as a comfortable win quickly turned into a dramatic finish as the Medford Rogues saw off the Corvallis Knights for a 5-4 win tonight at Harry and David Field. The win give the Rogues a 2-1 series win and improves their league standing to 8-10. Corvallis heads home sitting in third of the South Division and a league record of 7-14.
Unlike the previous two nights, it was the Rogues who took the first lead with a run in the third. Two runs in the fifth further extended the lead to 3-0 while Corvallis struggled to get on the board. A two run homer by right fielder Danny Mayer gave the Rogues a 5-0 cushion before Corvallis scored four in the top of the eighth to keep things interesting.
After a couple of close calls at the plate, Corvallis Head Coach, Brooke Knight argued a pitch that would have been a ball four and was ejected. Knight's ejection highlighted the emotional intensity of the game heading into the late innings.
Jackson Bertsch started on the mound for the Rogues and pitched 7.2 innings for 104 pitches. Bertsch gave up seven hits for four runs all of which were earned while striking out three and currently has a 7.84 ERA for the season. Houston Samuel and Jamie Flynn also made appearances on the mound.
On offense, Mayer led the Rogues with four at bats for one run, two hits, two RBI's, and a homer while his batting average for the season improved to .350. Second baseman John Kinne also had a strong outing for the Rogues. In his two at bats, Kinne recorded one hit, one run, and one RBI and improves to a .267 batting average.
For Corvallis, pitcher Cameron Bishop recorded the loss from his four innings pitched. Bishop gave up three hits, one run which was earned while walking two and striking out three. Bertsch recorded the win for the Rogues while Flynn picked up the save.
The Rogues remain at home for the next three days for a three game series against the Cowlitz Black Bears. The first game gets underway tomorrow night at Harry and David Field with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm.
