Walla Walla Sweets News Release
WALLLA WALLA, Wash. - Jeider Rincon got them rolling, Jake Simmons kept them moving, and Cam Rcihman shut the door.
The three Walla Walla Sweets pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over the Wenatchee AppleSox on Tuesday at Borleske Stadium. The Sweets (2-2) have now won six of the last seven meetings against the AppleSox (0-1) overall and seven of their last five games in Walla Walla.
Jeider Rincon started the Sweets out by getting the side in order in the first inning, racking up two of his six strikeouts on the night. The left-hander went deeper into the game than any other Sweets starter has to date, throwing five full innings. He never allowed more than one base runner in any frame and just four overall without a hit.
Wenatchee starter Gage Burland loaded the bases with a single and two walks in the first inning but got Juan Gamez to pop out to end the thread. The Sweets would put the go-ahead run a third two more times in the next three innings, but Burland held them off the board for the full length of his five-inning start.
Both teams went to the bullpens in the sixth, with Jake Simmons (1-1, 1.35) took the hill for Walla Walla, striking out two after putting the go-ahead run on base. Micael Taylor (0-1, 3.00) came on for Burland and Wenatchee but loaded the bases with one out for returning Sweet Moe Handcox, who drove in the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field that brought Gamez home.
Simmons returned to the mound for two more innings and kept Wenatchee off the board, getting help from Handcox, who made a catch at the wall and one deep in left-field foul territory - before giving way to Cam Richman, who threw a perfect ninth inning to get his first save of the year.
The Sweets return to action Wednesday night against the AppleSox at 7:05. Tickets are available online at wallawallasweets.com or by calling 509-522-2255.
