Walla Walla Sweets News Release

Longview, Wa- The Walla Walla Sweets came into Cowlitz hot off a series victory over Klamath Falls. Any momentum that they brought in was stopped by the Black Bears in a 12-1 loss.

The scoring started with an unearned run off Sweets' starting pitcher Joe Demers in the first. After Ryan Aguilar reached on an error to begin the inning, he came around to score on a RBI groundout by Mitch Bevacqua. The flood gates then started to open in the second. The Black Bears loaded the bases on two walks and a single and scored their second run when Jake Pavletich crossed home plate on an RBI walk to Sean Sutten. Two batters later, Slate Miller came up with 2 outs and he cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line. That gave Cowlitz a 5-0 lead.

The Sweets would get on the board in the 5th when Matt Whitney began the inning with a double and came around to score on a wild pitch two batters later. On the pitching side for the Sweets, Joe Demers settled down after a rough beginning to his start and spun three scoreless innings in the third, fourth and fifth in which he faced the minimum number of hitters.

The Black Bears would add four more runs in the seveth again. It was highlighted by another bases clearing, three-run triple. This time, it was Bevacqua who delivered the blow for Cowlitz and that made the score 9-1 through seven. The following inning, in the bottom of the eighth, the Bears showed that they weren't done on the offensive side by adding three more runs on RBIs by Henderson, AJ Graffanino and Aguilar. This led to the final score of 12-1.

The second game of this series will be played at David Story Field at 6:35 tomorrow, June 23rd.
