Sweets Drop Series Opener at Klamath Falls in First Road Game of '13

June 13, 2013 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release

KLAMATH FALLS, OR -- Right fielder Mike Paulson gave the Walla Walla Sweets a nice start to the 2013 road schedule with a two-run home run in the first inning at Kiger Stadium, but the Gems still pulled ahead to win 13-7 by game's end. Sweets starting pitcher Jonathan Harris took his second loss of the season to move to 0-2 after starting the game going 3.2 innings without allowing a hit.

But Gem's catcher Dempsey Grover hit a sharp double to center field to drive in center fielder Chet Thompson for Klamath Falls' first hit of the game. Thompson walked to start the frame, part of a four-run fourth inning. Starting pitcher Skye Adams, who came into the line up after right fielder Nick Fisher injured his leg running to first base the inning before, collected an infield single to send third baseman LJ Brewster home. Brewster was one of three walks Harris surrendered on the night.

The offense tacked on another two runs when a passed ball allowed two men to reach scoring position. First baseman Jack Karraker slapped a single up the middle to give the Gems a 4-2 lead they'd never relinquish.

Grover had the biggest blow of the night with a three-run home run to left field in the fifth. The Gems scored once more, but Harris completed the frame, ending his night with five innings pitched, allowing six earned runs and striking out six. Josh Wagner came on in relief and gave up a run on two hits in one complete inning in the sixth.

Walla Walla didn't score again until third baseman John Skrbec added to his home run total with a shot to center field in the eighth inning, his third of the year. With center fielder Kramer Lindell already at second base, the play was initially ruled an RBI double. The three-man umpiring crew met to discuss the play and quickly overturn the call, allowing the Sweets to pull closer at 8-4.

But the Gems weren't finished.

With Sweets reliever Jake Campeau on the mound, a five-run eighth spelled doom for Walla Walla as Klamath Falls sent 11 hitters to the plate. With two outs, the Gems notched four consecutive singles to wear Campeau out, who finished with an inning pitched, six hits, one walk and two earned runs. The Sweets defense committed two errors in the frame.

Walla Walla made it an interesting ninth inning by sending eight hitters to the plate, scoring three times, but a Scott Silva pop out to first base ended the game, a 13-7 final decision in the Gems' favor.

Klamath Falls starter Skye Adams went five complete innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and four strikeouts for his first win this year.

Game two is set for Thursday, with first pitch at 6:35 p.m.
