Sweets Drop Rain-Shortened Rubber Match to Bells

June 19, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- It was supposed to be a pitcher's duel. It was supposed to be a heated showdown to decide a nip-and-tuck series.

It also, as of 5:00 P.M. on Thursday, was not supposed to rain until after the game was long over, but things went far from according to forecast.

The Walla Walla Sweets fell to the Bellingham Bells in a rain-shortened rubber match, 1-0, on Thursday night at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham.

For the Sweets (6-6), Cooper Powell (0-1, 4.17) started about as well as could be expected, getting the side in order and retiring seven of the first eight batters he faced before the Bells (8-4) plated their only run in the third inning. After K.J. Brady hit a one-out double, a Beau Branton groundout moved him to third, and Dustin Brashears singled to bring Brady across the plate. Powell faced the minimum in the fourth, the last at-bat for the Bells.

The offense, meanwhile, was stymied by the rain-soaked debut of Justin Calomeni (1-0, 0.00) who threw five scoreless innings for the win and struck out eight batters total, two in each of the first four innings, before turning an unassisted double play that ultimately ended the game.

Play was suspended in the middle of the fifth when Cooper Powell went out for his warm-up pitches, and the mound was tarped for roughly 30 minutes before the game was officially ended.

The Sweets play host to the Klamath Falls Gems on Friday at Borleske Stadium at 7:05. For tickets, go to wallawallasweets.com or call 509-522-2255.
