Trenton Devils News Release
Trenton, NJ - After recording a hat trick in the most recent contest between Elmira and Trenton November 20, Andrew Sweetland scored his second hat trick of the season against the Devils Wednesday night to lead the Jackals to a 5-2 victory at Sun National Bank Center. The Donati brothers also played a pivotal role in the Atlantic Division-leading Jackals' third straight win over Trenton, with Tyler scoring two goals and one assist, and Justin earning three helpers.
The Devils started the game strong, with Ryan Ginand punishing the Jackals' first-period lack of discipline by scoring his seventh goal of the season to tie the score, 1-1. Ginand's goal, assisted by Ryan Hayes and Chase Watson, came while Tyler Donati was serving four minutes in the penalty box for high-sticking. The score at 16:51 of the opening period tied the game after Tyler Donati had given the Jackals a 1-0 lead 7:56 before.
The Devils moved ahead 2-1 with Jeremy Akeson beating Elmira goaltender Marco Cousineau over his blocker after receiving a pass from Justin Coutu while Trenton was shorthanded, 4:09 into the second period. The Devils killed off the rest of Jackals power play, but Matt Lombardi's second minor of the period gave Elmira another extra-man chance shortly thereafter. The Jackals needed only 16 seconds of the power play to cash in and tie the score with Andrew Sweetland burying his 11th goal of the season and the Donati twins earning assists. Less than three minutes later, Sweetland scored again by banging a slap shot past Connelly to give Elmira a 3-2 lead.
The Devils pushed for the tie by carrying the play in the early minutes of the final stanza, but at 10:40, Sweetland capped off his natural hat trick by ripping a shot over the shoulder of Shane Connelly while on a breakaway. Tyler Donati added an insurance marker with 6:12 remaining as the Jackals went on to defeat Trenton 5-2.
Shane Connelly made 22 saves on 27 shots in the loss as Trenton falls to 8-11-0-1. Winning for the first time in four games, Elmira improves to 11-5-5-0. The Devils and Jackals have the day off Thursday before meeting again Friday and Saturday at Elmira's First Arena. Trenton will returns home Sunday to take on the South Carolina Stingrays at 4:00 p.m.
