Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Sugar Land, TX - The Tacoma Rainiers' (54-52, 17-14) first five base hits on Friday night were doubles, and the visitors rode that wave to a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (45-61, 12-19). Tacoma is 2-2 on their road trip to suburban Houston, and 9-7 on the road in the second half. The Rainiers halted a five-game skid in one-run games; each of their last five losses (dating to 7/22) had been by a single run.
Sam Haggerty doubled down the right field line on the second pitch of the game, and Brian O'Keefe yanked a double to the wall in left to score Haggerty for a 1-0 Rainiers lead. Haggerty (seven games) and O'Keefe (eight games) extended hitting streaks.
The Space Cowboys scored a single run in the first, third and fourth innings; when Rylan Bannon homered in the bottom of the third (14), it was the fourth time in four games against Tacoma he's gone yard. Bannon's night ended with three hits (two runs); he was a single shy of the cycle in defeat.
Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, the Rainiers cut it to a one-run deficit on a Haggerty sac fly, his 24th RBI since July 1 in only 27 games. Tacoma tied it and took the lead in the seventh; Taylor Trammell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and one out, before Jake Scheiner singled to go in front 4-3; Scheiner's 86 RBI lead the Pacific Coast League.
Rainiers RHP Darren McCaughan threw 85 pitches over 5.0 IP (7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), and the club improved to 12-6 in his starts this season. Sugar Land starter Jairo Solis lasted 5.2 IP (5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K). Tacoma lefty Blake Weiman was dominant in immediate relief of McCaughan, striking out four of the five batters he faced over 1.2 IP of perfect work.
RHP Stephen Kolek continued his exemplary stretch for the Rainiers; he's allowed only two runs over his last 20.0 IP (0.90 ERA) after 1.1 scoreless on Friday. Kolek has worked five consecutive scoreless outings, and 11 of his last 13 appearances have been scoreless. RHP Riley O'Brien worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to secure his seventh save.
Tacoma won without homering, snapping an eight-game streak with at least one longball.
The penultimate game of this weeklong series will be on Saturday at Constellation Field, a 5:05 PT/7:05 CT first pitch. Tacoma will start RHP Marcus Walden, against Sugar Land RHP Misael Tamarez.
