LAST TIME OUT
TOLEDO, OH (June 21, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell just shy to the Toledo Mud Hens by a 3-2 final on Tuesday. The RailRiders put the tying run aboard in the ninth but failed to complete a comeback.
It was the first trip to Fifth Third Field for the RailRiders since May 19, 2019. JP Sears took the mound for the RailRiders with an early 1-0 lead. Estevan Florial kick-started the ballgame with a leadoff infield single. Oswald Peraza drove him in for his 20th RBI of the season. Sears was tagged for two in an elongated bottom of the second, surrendering three hits in the inning. Sears lasted four innings on Tuesday, taking a no decision.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tied the game thanks to a triple from Jake Bauers and a sacrifice fly from Derek Dietrich. The tie disappeared in the bottom of the seventh. John Valente singled in the eventual winning run off Vinny Nittoli.
The RailRiders mustered an effort in the ninth. Miguel Andújar and Greg Bird both singled with an out in the inning. But Chris Owings, making his RailRiders debut, popped out and Jake Bauers almost found a lucky hop but grounded out to end the game. Michael Mariot (2-0) was credited with the victory. Nittoli (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season. Derek Law recorded the final three outs for his 13th save.
NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are in Toldeo, Ohio for the first time since May 19, 2019. They split a four-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens in that series. This six-game series is the only time these two teams meet this season. This is also currently the furthest Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has traveled this season. Fifth Third Field is 479 miles away from PNC Field.
WHO DAT - The Mud Hens, Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, are the first International League West team the RailRiders face this season. They find themselves in fourth place in the West division entering Wednesday. Toledo has won seven of its last ten games and is 4.5 GB of Nashville.
TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT - The RailRiders lost Tuesday's opener in Toledo 3-2. In one-run ball games this season, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is 10-13. Their last five games have been decided by three runs or less (2-3). In games where the decision is finalized by three runs or less, the RailRiders are 19-23 this year.
HOW MANY HITS YA GOT? NOT A LOT - The Mud Hens tallied just four hits in Tuesday's opener. It was one more than the fewest hits allowed in any nine-inning game this season for the RailRiders pitching staff. Three times this year the staff has surrendered just three hits. Strangely enough, the RailRiders are 1-2 in those three games.
PITA HOT - Matt Pita was activated from the injured list Tuesday. Pita has not appeared in a game since May 12, putting him on the IL for 39 days. At the time of his injury, Pita led the team in home runs (4) in 19 games played. He played 27 games for the RailRiders in 2021.
MAKIN' MOVES - Tuesday, the Yankees announced they have claimed former RailRider Albert Abreu off waivers from the Kansas City Royals. In a corresponding move, David McKay was designated for an assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster.
DEAR JHONY - Tonight, Jhony Brito takes the hill for his first start at Fifth Third Field. The 24-year-old from Puerto Plata is making his fourth start with the RailRiders since joining the team on June 1. Brito has allowed just two runs in 17.1 innings across three starts at the Triple-A level against Lehigh Valley, Syracuse and Rochester. After tallying a 1.08 WHIP in the month of May while with the Double-A Somerset Patriots, Brito enters Wednesday's game with 0.92 WHIP in his first few Triple-A starts in June.
BIENVENIDO DE NUEVO - Oswald Peraza returned to the lineup on Sunday after missing four games due to a non-COVID illness. In his first at bat, Peraza launched his team-best seventh home run of the season. He went on to go two-for-four with a stolen base. He is in his first full season with the RailRiders (eight games in 2021) and is ranked as the number two prospect in the Yankees system by Baseball America. He finds himself on a five-game hit streak and a six-game on base streak.
STREAKY - Oswald Peraza has a five-game hitting streak... Greg Bird has a four-game hitting streak... Jake Bauers and Tim Locastro have three-game hitting streaks... Zach Greene has made five-straight scoreless appearances... Greg Weissert has made four-straight scoreless outings... Jimmy Cordero has three-straight scoreless outings (four of five games this season)...
BET ON THE SET - The RailRiders just tallied their first series win at PNC Field this season when they won four of six against Rochester last week. It was their first at home since they took five of six against the Red Wings September 7-12, 2021. The RailRiders have won just three series this year.
ON DECK - The RailRiders return home on Tuesday, June 28 to face the Buffalo Bisons. It's "Twosday" at PNC Field. Get 2-for-1 lawn or bleacher seats online only and enjoy $2 Landshark Lager tallboys for two hours after gates open, presented by PrimoHoagies and The River.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - Including the RailRiders, four of the five teams in the system lost a one-run ballgame. The New York Yankees (50-18) fell short in their comeback against the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4. The Yanks scored twice in the ninth thanks to a Marwin Gonzalez two-run shot. Isaac Paredes homered three times in the game to lead the Rays to victory. Jordan Montgomery takes the ball tonight against Shane Baz starting at 7:10 PM... The Somerset Patriots (41-23) came up a run short to the Hartford Yard Goats 3-2 on Tuesday. All but one run in the game scored on a homer including a pair of solo shots from Elijah Dunham and Anthony Volpe. Mitch Spence takes the ball tonight at 7:05 PM... The Hudson Valley Renegades (32-32) dropped a 7-3 game to the Winston-Salem Dash. Aaron Pelensky and Trey Sweeney both went yard. Matt Sauer gets the start tonight at 7:00 PM... The Tampa Tarpons (27-37) came up short against the Clearwater Threshers 3-2. Over their last ten games, Tampa has lost six games by one run. The series continues tonight at 6:30 PM as Domingo Germán is set to make a rehab start...
