Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
THE GREAT ESCAPE: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders withstood a pair of late-inning rallies by the Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox) to grab a 5-4 win on Friday night. The RailRiders (11-12) earned their second victory at BB&T Ballpark (opened in 2014). All five SWB runs came with two outs in the inning. Nick Rumbelow secured the victory by striking out two with the tying run in scoring position.
DOWN TO THE WIRE: The RailRiders played in their fourth one-run game of the road trip. The team dropped two at Gwinnett (6-5, 3-2) and fell to the Knights 8-7 on Thursday. SWB has played in seven games decided by one run, winning four. Durham has played the fewest one-run games (1-3).
ROCKIN' REF: Rob Refsnyder enters Saturday on a six-game hitting streak. The run matches his longest Triple-A hitting streak set June 26-30, 2014. The RailRiders' second baseman is 10-for-24 (.416) with four doubles and six RBI.
JOHNNY BE GOOD: Jonathan Galvez has doubled in three of his last four games, going 6-for-15 (.400) with three RBIs, three walks and a run scored in that time. He has started at first, third, designated hitter and in left field on the year.
ROLLING ALONG: Kyle Roller finished 0-for-4, snapping a five-game hitting streak. Roller owns a pair of five-game streaks, but has not had a six-game streak since Aug. 24-29, 2014. His 15 walks have him behind only Durham's Vince Belnome (19) among IL hitters.
NOT-SO-GENTLE BEN: Ben Gamel finished 1-for-4 with 2RBI. He ranks among the IL's best in batting average (5th, .375), on-base percentage (5th, .437) and slugging percentage (4th, .594). His four triples have him trailing only Toledo's Daniel Fields (5). Gamel has more triples than four IL teams (Buffalo, Lehigh Valley, Norfolk, Pawtucket).
STOLEN-BASE STRIFE: The RailRiders have nabbed just three men in 26 tries on the year (.115). Only Charlotte has allowed more total steals (24), but owns a better efficiency (.143). The Louisville Bats have also allowed 23 pilfered bags, but own a .303 efficiency.
KNIGHTED: The RailRiders finished the 2014 regular-season series 2-6 against the Knights. The RailRiders had a tough time retiring Charlotte hitters. The Knights hit .341/.417/.594/1.011 as a team against SWB pitching. That included an eye-popping 17 home runs in just 65 innings. Charlotte hit just .256 against the rest of the IL while posting a 57-79 record (.419). Before losing each set last season, SWB had not lost a series to Charlotte since dropping three of four from June 8-11, 2010 at Knights Stadium. That SWB squad still won five of the eight overall clashes though. The SWB franchise had not lost a season series to Charlotte since at least 2004 and suffered zero sweep defeats in that time.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders pitching staff ranks third in the IL with 176 strikeouts...the RailRiders own 182 strikesouts, the third most in the IL...SWB's Cole Figueroa entered today as the toughest hitter to whiff in the IL (42.5 PA/K)...Matt Tracy has started two games for SWB, leading with the lead each time (2-0 when he pitches)...the first timer violation occurred in the 4th inning at 7:49 p.m. against Charlotte pitcher Shawn Haviland...Austin Romine extended his hitting streak to six with a two-run double...Jose Pirela is 4-for-9 (.444) during his rehab stint with a double and an RBI...Pirela has played third and second base, committing an error at each position...A wild pitch charged to Kyle Drabek on 4/30 (6R, 3ER)was changed to a passed ball against catcher Kevan Smith after the game on 5/1.
