Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (July 24, 2006) - One lousy hit. One hit to a guy that wasn't even on the Palm Beach Cardinals roster on Sunday. That was all Fort Myers Miracle starter Anthony Swarzak gave up in dominating the Cardinals as he hurled a complete game one hit shutout as the Miracle blanked the Cardinals 6-0 on Monday night at Hammond Stadium.
Swarzak, who said he was tired of sucking during the first two and a half months of the season decided to do something about it. In the month of July he has. He entered play on Tuesday night with a 0.47 ERA in the month and lowered that with his masterful performance against the Cardinals. He breezed through the first four innings without allowing a base runner. In the top of the fifth he retired his 13th straight hitter, Joe Mather, on a pop out to first. The next hitter, Randy Roth, who was assigned to the Cardinals on Tuesday from Single-A Quad Cities, where he hit .307-18-67 ripped a double just over the head of left-fielder Deacon Burns. Roth slugged 25 doubles at Quad Cities this season. Swarzak walked the next hitter Kevin Collins, but got Matt Pagnozzi to fly out to left and Mike Ferris to strike out. Swarzak allowed just one more base runner, a two out walk to Juan Lucena in the sixth, but retired the final 10 men he faced, getting Ryan Barthelemy to fly out to left to end the game. Swarzak earned his second complete game of the season and first shutout going 9.0 innings allowing one hit while walking two and striking out four in picking up his sixth win of the season.
The Miracle got Swarzak all the run support he needed in the second when Steve Tolleson singled to left and Burns followed with a two run homer to right, his second of the season, which put the Miracle up 2-0.
The Miracle, who improved to 17-12 in the second half, put up four in the sixth. J.R. Taylor walked, moved to second on a single by David Winfree and scored on a double from Trevor Plouffe. Winfree scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. After Burns walked to put runners at first and third, a passed ball allowed Plouffe to score and Burns moved up to second. Burns scored on a single by Korey Feiner.
The complete game shutout by Swarzak was the first by a Miracle since Adam Harben threw a three hit shutout against the Dunedin Blue Jays on August 8, 2005.
The Miracle complete their homestand, which they are 5-1 on, Tuesday night when the Cardinals and Miracle wrap up their four game series. The Miracle are TBA and the Cardinals send RHP Nick Webber (5-4, 3.57) to the mound. It is Naples Daily News "Two for One" Tuesday presented by WCKT 100 along with a Salute to All Things Sweet Night i.e. a Salute to Miracle radio broadcaster Sean Aronson.
