Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) - Adam Thomas struck out 14 batters in seven innings, but took a 2-1 loss to the Tampa Yankees at Holman Stadium Monday night. Dodgers pitching struck out a total of 18 Yankees to match season-high but the Yankees took their third straight from the Dodgers. The series ends Tuesday night at 7:00 PM.
The 14 strikeouts from Thomas are the most by a single Dodgers pitcher this year. The previous high of 13 was set by Scott Elbert in his near no-hitter against Daytona on June 28. Wesley Wright, in his return from AA-Jacksonville, pitched two scoreless innings and struck out four for the total of 18.
Tampa's first run came on a leadoff homer from Hector Made in the third inning. The Dodgers tied it in the fourth when Drew Locke doubled with two outs and scored on an error off the bat of Cole Bruce.
The eventuall winning run for Tampa came in the fifth. Thomas hit Mark Carroll with a pitch on a 3-2 count and Carroll stole second on a pitchout. It was a close play and was intensely argued by the Dodgers. Victor Hall followed with a double to right that scored Carroll.
Yankees starter Chase Wright (7-2) matched the seven innings from Thomas (2-4). He allowed five hits and just the one unearned run. Wright walked one and struck out eight. Paul Thorp tossed a perfect ninth for his 3rd save in as many chances.
