Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - There certainly won't be any issues with unfamiliarity in the 2011 CPL Petitt Cup playoffs.
The Fayetteville SwampDogs, CPL South first and second half champions, will battle their CPL South rival Wilmington Sharks in the first round of the playoffs, beginning on Thursday. The two teams have met 12 times this season, with Fayetteville winning seven of the 12 games.
"It's always tough playing a team this many times, but there certainly won't be any surprises," said SwampDogs head coach Darrell Handelsman. "We've had success down there, and we worked hard to earn home field in the first and second rounds, so we feel very confident in our ballclub heading into the postseason."
The series will open at Buck Hardee Field in Wilmington on Thursday, where the SwampDogs are 5-1 this season. It will then shift to J.P. Riddle Stadium for game two on Friday, and the SwampDogs are asking all fans in attendance to wear their blue SwampDogs gear in support of the team's playoff run.
"Fayetteville has the best fans in the league," said SwampDogs head coach Darrell Handelsman. "I know they'll come out and support this great initiative and show their support for their local hometown heroes of the diamond."
The SwampDogs are Sharks are not the only two teams that will know each other well when the first round begins. All four first round Petitt Cup series are divisional matchups, as CPL North rivals Edenton and Peninsula will meet in the 1-8 matchup. Edenton was 9-3 against Peninsula, including winning the last six meetings.
Meanwhile No. 3 Thomasville will take on No. 6 Gastonia and No. 4 Forest City, the two-time defending Petitt Cup champions, will face No. 5 Asheboro, both all-CPL West matchups. Thomasville won five of the eight meetings against Gastonia this season, while Forest City defeated Asheboro in seven of the 12 meetings between the two teams.
The four teams advancing from the quarterfinals will be re-seeded for the semifinals, with the highest seed remaining playing the lowest seed remaining, and the two middle teams matching up. The semifinals will be played from Monday, August 8 through Wednesday, August 10.
The best-of-three championship series will be held from Friday, August 12 through Sunday, August 14.
