Keene Swamp Bats News Release

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI - RHP Evan Sperling (Virginia) tossed six shutout innings and the Keene SwampBats (8-9) topped the Ocean State Waves (9-7) by a score of 6-2 on Tuesday night at Old Mountain Field in Rhode Island.

Sperling (1-2) gave up four hits while walking three and fanning seven over his six innings of work.

The trio of RHP Jeffrey Praml (Southern New Hampshire), RHP Heibert Romero (Southeastern) and RHP Justin Willis (Vanderbilt) combined to close things out for the SwampBats.

Praml (2.0 IP, 3 H, R, ER, 2 K) allowed one run over two innings of work in the seventh and eighth, while Romero (0.1 IP, 2 H, R, ER, BB, K) and Willis (0.2 IP, BB. K) combined to get the final three outs.

Trailing 6-2, Ocean State had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth, but Willis fanned Garrett Hodges (Kennesaw State) and Michael Turner (Kent State) grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Keene grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first as Jacob Koos (Stetson) led off with a single, advanced to third on a throwing error charged to Ocean State's Grant English (Winthrop) and scored on an RBI groundout from Michael Woodworth (UConn).

Waves starter Nick Mondak (St. John's) gave up one run (none earned) on three hits to go along with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.0 IP and was dealt the loss, dropping to 1-1 on the season.

In the top of the fifth, a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with one out before Woodworth plated a run via an RBI fielder's choice and a run scored later in the frame when he was erased on a caught stealing to give the SwampBats a 3-0 lead.

Joe Breaux (Alabama) delivered an RBI ground-rule double as part of a three-run sixth and a pair of bases-loaded walks knocked in a pair of runs which made it a 6-0 game in favor of the visitors.

English's solo shot in the eighth put Ocean State on the board and cut the lead to 6-1.

Koos (2-4, BB, RBI, R) had a multi-hit game for Keene.

The SwampBats return home to host the Plymouth Pilgrims on Wednesday night at Alumni Field in Keene. First pitch is set for 6:30 and RHP Tyler Drabick (0-1, 8.64) out of Kent State University gets the start for the SwampBats.
