
Wrighter Shuts Door on Blue Sox

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Newport Gulls secured its tenth win of the season on Monday night, edging out the Valley Blue Sox by a score of 7 - 5. Cardines Field was packed with over 2,500 fans in attendance for the first ever "Aspire Dermatology Red Sox Night". Red Sox legend Bill "Spaceman" Lee was in attendance as well as Red Sox Mascot Wally, and Pawtucket Red Sox Mascots Paws and Sox.
The Gulls offense was led by Logan Harvey, who drove in three runs on three hits. Tim Tawa and Zach Britton also had multi-hit games for Newport. Britton's two hits brought his average up to .429, placing him second in the NECBL in batting average. The Gulls totaled 13 hits, seven of them for extra bases.
David Stiehl picked up the win for Newport pitching 6.1 innings, surrendering four runs on four hits and striking out five. The losing pitcher for Valley was Nick Dombkowski, who gave up five earned runs on 12 hits in 5.2 innings. Nathan Wrighter secured his league-leading fifth save of the season, and his second consecutive six-out save. The right-handed pitcher out of Bryant University has yet to surrender a run in his 11 innings pitched.
Newport returns to action on Wednesday when they host the New Bedford Bay Sox (9- 7). First pitch from Cardines Field will be at 6:35 p.m.
