Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – The Swamp Foxes' offense tallied 240 yards of total offense while its defense limited Birmingham to 163 yards as Charleston edged out the Steeldogs, 38-37 Saturday night.

The win was Charleston's first for the year, and the first in the coaching career of head coach Rik Richards, the youngest coach in af2. The loss for Birmingham was its second-consecutive in the middle of a three-game road swing.

Newly acquired quarterback John Turman threw a career-high 42 passes on the night, completing 18 of them for 202 yards and three scores. His favorite target on the night was offensive specialist Terrance Quattlebaum, who hauled in eight passes.

Leroy McFadden earned the games Ironman award, catching four passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. He added five carries for nine yards and an additional touchdown.

Offensive player of the game Aryvia Holmes led all receivers, tallying 102 yards receiving on nine catches for four touchdowns.

With 3:45 remaining in the first quarter, Charleston got on the scoreboard when Marlon Moye-Moore dashed in from seven yards out, capping off a five play, 44-yard drive. It was the first time in 2003 that the Swamp Foxes' offense had put points on the board in the opening quarter.

Charleston led at halftime, 26-20.

Trailing 38-31 late in the fourth quarter, the Steeldogs scored 22 seconds remaining on the clock to pull the game to within one at 38-37. However, the Rhett Gallego extra point sailed wide right.

On the ensuing onsides kick attempt, the ball bounded out to the 16-yard line where Mike Chandler emerged with the ball from the middle of the scrum, sealing the victory for the Foxes.

The Swamp Foxes hit the road again next week, traveling into Georgia to face the Columbus Wardogs at 7:00 pm. The game can be heard locally on ESPN Radio, 1340 AM or online at www.goswampfoxes.com. Birmingham travels to Estero, FL for a date with the Florida Firecats.
