Keene Swamp Bats News Release

The first time Keene came to Vermont, the Swamp Bats were blown out of the water 9-0. This time, it turned out to be a closer contest, going into extra innings with the Mountaineers winning 5-4.

This one in Vermont was quite the pitching duel, with both starters making it into the sixth inning. Wales Toney, out of Clemson University, made his first start of the year and threw a good one. The redshirt freshmen went five innings, only giving up one run, on just one hit and two walks.

Vermont's starter David Rosenberger pitched well also though, going five and third inning, surrendering two runs.

Those two runs came on an RBI single from Dan Nichols, and later off of a solo homerun from Brian O'Grady. With the game at 2-2, Keene took the lead in the top of the seventh inning from a JP Sportman RBI single, but gave it right back to the Mountaineers in the bottom half of the frame.

Tanner Delahoy came on in relief of Toney but ran into trouble in the seventh. After a leadoff double and walk, Nathan Kirby came on to pitch, but could not stop the Mountaineers from pushing those two runners in, giving Vermont a 4-3 lead.

Keene came back though in the ninth to tie the game. JP Sportman came through with another big RBI single to make it a 4-4 score. The Swamp Bats though, were unable to capitalize on a bases loaded opportunity, stranding the leading run with one out.

Jordan Simons, out of the University of Louisville, came on to relive Kirby in the bottom of the ninth and got Vermont to go down in order to send the game into extra innings.

The Swamp Bats again had a man in scoring position after Zach Lucas and JP Sportman singled with two outs, but Brain O'Grady was robbed of a hit from a diving defensive play from the Mountaineers first basemen AJ Ryan.

Vermont quickly loaded the bases against Simons, on two bunt singles and a hit by pitch, which chased Simons and brought on Dustin Cook. Cook threw a wild pitch to the backstop against the first batter he faced which allowed the Mountaineers to score the winning run from third and win the game, 5-4.

The loss puts Keene at 3-11 for the season, dropping them eight games behind Vermont in first place. The team will have three straight days off before facing the Newport Gulls at Alumni Field on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
