Swamp Bats Capitilize On Late Inning Vermont Error, Win Ninth Straight Against Mountaineers

It took extra innings on Saturday night in Vermont, but Keene were able to push across a run on two Vermont errors in the top of the tenth to defeat the Mountaineers 4-3.

Nick Neumann made the start for the Swamp Bats and continued to impress.

The right-hander out of Central Connecticut State University lasted seven innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and one walk with four strikeouts. The only two runs Neumann gave up were in the first inning, and then looked very good through his next six innings.

Keene were shut out by Vermont's starter Cody Brown for five innings, but were able to strike three runs in the top of the sixth.

Back to back singles by St. Johns' Zach Lauricella and Cyprus College's Dylan Moore go things started for Keene and then the next batter Zach Lucas, Louisville, drove in Lauricella with a sacrifice fly. Brian O'Grady then came on two batters later and was able to hit a line drive down the left line for a two RBI double which made the score 3-2 Keene.

The Swamp Bats brought on John Birkbeck out of Kent State in the eighth inning to relieve Neumann and threw a scoreless frame to move the game to the ninth.

After Keene failed to score in the top of the inning, the Swamp Bats handed the ball to San Jacinto's Dustin Cook to close things out. Cook gave up a one-out double to Thomas Roulis the next batter Mike Vigliarolo tied the game with an RBI double.

After a couple of intentional walks to load the bases with one out, Cook (1-1) was able to get a strikeout and groundout to keep Keene alive for extra innings.

Vermont booted the ball in the top of the tenth as a couple of errors scored Lauricella to make the score 4-3 Keene.

James Connell, Kennesaw State, came on in the 10th and pitched a scoreless inning to seal the 4-3 victory over Vermont.

The victory is Keene's 9th in a row, who now are in sole possession of first place in the Western Division. The Swamp Bats will send six to the All-Star game tomorrow in Laconia and will then get back it in league play on Monday night in Newport to take on the Gulls.
