North Adams SteepleCats News Release
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - After surrendering the game-tying run in the top of the seventh inning, freshman Brad Anderson (Pepperdine) came to bat with the bases loaded and made the most of his chance, launching his team-leading third homer of the year - a grand slam, nonetheless - over the left field wall to send the SteepleCats to a walk-off, 6-2 victory over Danbury in game one of an NECBL Western Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Joe Wolfe Field.
Winners of three in a row, the SteepleCats (15-16) will have a chance to move back to .500 for the first time in two weeks with a sweep against the Westerners (12-20) in the nightcap later Saturday afternoon.
Anderson's blast was his first hit of the game, adding four more RBI to his team-leading total of 14. It also came after All-Star closer Joeanthony Rivera (Barry) gave up just his second earned run of the summer that allowed Danbury to tie the contest at 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning.
But the SteepleCats came right back, as freshman Jose Cuas (Maryland) led the inning off with a ground rule double before an intentional walk, a fielder's choice and another walk loaded the bases for Anderson, who took care of the rest.
Because of the walk-off, Rivera became the pitcher of record and improved to 3-0. Starter Trevor Scott (UC San Diego) went four innings and yielded just one run on four hits with a strikeout and two walks, settling for a no decision on the day. After him, junior Steve Frey (Monmouth) and sophomore Doug Willey (Franklin Pierce) contributed scoreless innings of relief.
Meanwhile, southpaw Rob Corsi, who was originally on the SteepleCats' roster prior to the start of the season, was pegged for a tough-luck loss after going six innings with just two runs - one earned - allowed on five hits, adding three strikeouts and a walk. Reliever Neil Fryer wound up with the loss after allowing the two hits and four runs in the seventh.
Like last night, North Adams hopped in front with two quick runs in the bottom of the first. After junior Joe Landi (URI) led off the frame with an infield single, the speedster was sacrificed to second and stole third before freshman Kevin Martir (Maryland) scored him on a groundball to short.
Then, with two outs, juniors Cody Doyle (Cal State LA) and Bryan Soloman (Eastern Kentucky) tallied back-to-back base hits to drive in Martir, putting the SteepleCats on top, 2-0, after an inning of play.
But Danbury answered right back with a run in the second, as Scott faced trouble after two walks and an error before Bryan Perlmuter drove in the Westerners' first run on a base knock through the left side. Later in the frame, the visitors had the bases loaded, but Scott induced fielder's choice to get out of the jam.
That score held all the way until the top of the seventh, when All-Star Daniel Spingola tripled to lead off the inning. Then, after Rivera got an out, pinch hitter Greg Pezzutto sent a sacrifice fly opportunity down the right field line where sophomore John Razzino (Franklin Pierce) came up with it and sent a strong toss to the plate, but Spingola got there just in time to tie the match.
North Adams needed not wait long, with the walk-off bomb coming in the bottom of the seventh to keep the SteepleCats unbeaten in three tries against the Westerners this summer.
