Sussex Suffers Blowout Loss to New Jersey

August 4, 2010 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Sussex Skyhawks News Release

Augusta, N.J. - August 4, 2010 - Right-handed starter Tim Stringer (3-4) was injured by a comebacker with two out in the second inning on Wednesday afternoon at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park as the Skyhawks lost 15-2 to the visiting New Jersey Jackals. After Stringer exited, Sussex relied on three relievers - including backup catcher Jonathan Gossard for the final three frames - to finish the game.

New Jersey scored twelve unanswered runs for right-handed starter Chris Vasami (2-0) in the first seven and one half innings including four in the second against Stringer. Right-handed Sussex reliever Ulysses Roque finished the second and hurled three and one-third innings, allowing two earned runs. Right-hander Matt Salvato surrendered an additional three runs in the sixth after retiring the first two batters he faced, and then manager Ed Ott turned to Gossard in the seventh to complete the game and spare the bullpen further work. The home team managed its two runs against left-handed reliever Edgar Estanga in the eighth on RBI base hits by Chase Fontaine and Kris Sanchez.

Despite the size of the loss, Skyhawks fans had moments to cheer about on Camp Day and Mom's Day at the ballpark. Sussex left fielder Kraig Binick stole his league-leading 31st base of the season in the third inning, tying Ron Perodin's team single-season record from 2007. Later on with Gossard pitching and the bench empty, right-handed closer Duaner Sanchez made an appearance in the field, substituting for center fielder Carl Loadenthal and moving over to right field. Sanchez flew out in his only at-bat in the bottom of the eighth, lowering his career batting average to a still-impressive .261.

The Skyhawks (5-11 second half, 30-32 overall) and Jackals (7-9, 26-36) conclude their four-game series on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. Visit Hawk Watch at www.sussexskyhawks.wordpress.com for a live, play-by-play blog of the action starting ten minutes prior to game time. Left-handed pitcher Paul Fagan (0-1, 9.90) will start for New Jersey on fireworks night at Skylands Park; Sussex has yet to announce a starting pitcher.
