ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (May 24, 2003) – The Atlantic City Surf split its doubleheader with the Newark Bears, Saturday evening, at the Sandcastle.

In the first game, Danny Clyburn's sacrifice fly plated Jason Torres in the tenth inning to give the Bears a 2-1 victory over the Surf.

The game was a pitchers duel from the start between Surf starter Dave Carroll and Newark's former Major Leaguer Jose Lima.

Newark scored its first run in the third inning when Al Benjamin led off with a single, stole second base and advanced to third on an error by the shortstop, then scored on a passed ball.

Pat Burns led off the fifth inning with a solo homer to right field off Lima to tie the contest at 1-1. Lima finished with seven innings pitched, allowing one run on just three hits while striking out eight and walking one.

Carroll tossed six and one-third innings, allowing the one unearned run on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

In the top of the tenth, Torres led off the inning with a single off Atlantic City's Lance Calmus (1-1) and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jack Santora. He ultimately moved to third on a single by Tom Hage and gave Newark the decisive run on Clyburn's fly ball to left field.

Manny Barrios pitched a scoreless tenth for Newark to pick up his third save of the season. Alberto Castillo (1-1) went two innings in relief for the Bears and struck out four to pick up the win.

In the nightcap, the Surf pounded out a season-high 13 hits and received a dominant performance from starter Anthony Chavez in a 6-1 win over Newark.

Chavez pitched all seven innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four and walking zero.

Simmons paced Atlantic City offensively, going 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Raul Marval had three hits and Shane Monahan added two.

The Surf scored four runs in the first inning and retained the lead to improve to 9-11 on the year. The Bears fall to 12-9 with the loss.

ON DECK: The Surf and the Bears conclude their series on Sunday, May 25, at 1:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle. A Surf Baseball Card Set will be given to the first 1,000 fans, sponsored by Kinko's.
