Atlantic City Surf News Release

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (July 24, 2002) – The Atlantic City Surf have made six more transactions to add to a lengthy list of July player personnel moves.

The Surf announced the release of outfielder Joe Hamilton and have traded left-handed pitcher Tony Shumaker to Newark for a player to be named later. Atlantic City has signed right-handed pitchers Anthony Chavez and Ismail Villegas, outfielder Ric Johnson, and catcher Adam Capodieci.

Hamilton played 56 games for the Surf this season, batting .254 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI while playing mostly in left field. On May 29 against Pennsylvania, Hamilton became the first player in Surf history to hit for the cycle in a game. Shumaker struggled with the Surf in his first two starts, allowing four earned runs in five and one-third innings pitched with four walks.

Chavez, a relief pitcher for most of his 10-year professional career, has accumulated 109 career minor league saves. Originally a 50th round draft pick by the Anaheim Angels in 1992, Chavez worked all the way up to the majors in 1997, pitching 9.2 innings for the Angels with 10 strikeouts, five walks, and just one unearned run allowed.

Villegas was originally selected by the Chicago Cubs in the fifth round of the 1995 draft. He was traded to the Atlanta Braves for Tyler Houston in 1996 and pitched one game for the Braves in 2000. After being sent back to Richmond (AAA), Villegas was released by the Braves in 2001. He played for Sacramento (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League and Campeche of the Mexican League so far this season.

Johnson was hitting .210 with 14 RBI before being released by Camden earlier this year. Capodieci, who played for Jackson of the independent Central League earlier this season, is expected to be a reserve catcher for the Surf.
