Newark Bears News Release

Newark, NJ –Wednesday, July 24, 2002 – The Newark Bears defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish by a score of 7-5 in front of 5,693 fans this afternoon. Newly acquired right-hander Kevin Perrucci made his first professional start, and while not factoring in the decision, still impressed by going 5.1 innings and allowing just six hits, four runs, only one of which was earned, while picking up two strikeouts.

Bridgeport got on the board in the third innings as a Michael Carter single to centerfield scored John Dorman and gave the Bluefish a 1-0 lead. Newark answered back in the bottom of the fourth as Joe Mathis singled home Ryan Minor and later came around to score on a fielding error by Dorman.

The Bears added another run in the fifth for a 3-1 lead when Paul Esposito singled home Mathis. The Bluefish battled back to take a brief lead in their half of the sixth as Dwayne Hosey drove in one and Gil Martinez drove in two more to put Bridgeport on top 4-3. However, Newark answered right back in their half of the sixth with four runs of their own on just two hits and a very costly Hector Kuilan error.

Steve Gagliano (2-2) relieved Perrucci in the sixth inning and got the win by going 2.2 with just two hits allowed and two walks while striking out three. Denny Bair worked the ninth inning and allowed one run to earn his third save of the season. Brad Cornett (10-4) took home the loss as he allowed seven runs, only three earned, on nine hits and a walk.

The Newark Bears will play game two of a three game series with the Bridgeport Bluefish tomorrow evening at 6:35 pm. Tickets for that game and the rest of the 2002 Second Half are on sale now by calling 973.483.6900 or through any Ticketmaster outlet in the tri-state area. Come Play In Our Yard.
