The Atlantic City Surf announced Friday the hiring of former Philadelphia Phillies slugger Greg Luzinski as the the club's hitting coach for the 2003 season.

Luzinski will replace another former Phillies slugger, Pete Incaviglia, as the club's hitting coach. Nicknamed "The Bull'' because of his powerful build and swing, Luzinski was a major part of the Phillies golden era in the 1970s.

"This is one of the biggest signings in Surf history,'''' Surf general manager Mario Perrucci said. "We''re thrilled to have Luzinski as part of our team. With Greg and (manager) Mitch Williams we have quite a coaching staff here in Atlantic City.''

The 52-year-old Luzinski hit 307 career home runs during his 14-year career in the majors and finished with a career batting average of .276. He played for the Phillies from 1970-1980 and for the Chicago White Sox from 1980-84.

"I'm excited to be coming to Atlantic City and I promise that there will be some great hitting this summer at the Sandcastle,'' Luzinski said. "I just need to learn to get along with Mitch but that won''t be a problem because I know him from fantasy camps that we worked together.''

Said Surf manager Mitch Williams about the Luzinski hiring: "I'm excited as hell. Greg really knows the game and I met him first when he was the hitting coach for Kansas City when I was there.''
