Surf Finishes First Half with 2-1 Victory; Sets Attendnace Mark

The Atlantic City Surf completed the first half of the sason with a 2-1 victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish before 2692 Monday at the Sandcastle. The crowd enabled the Surf to set a six-day record for attendance as the club drew 20,946 over the six-game holiday weekend. That eclisped the old mark of 20,931 set the week of July 17 2001 over a six-day period.

The Surf scored the winning run via a wild pitch in the seventh inning and used a stellar pitching effort from Jim Crowell who worked seven innings and only allowed four hits and one run in getting his fourth victory against three losses. Crowell struck out four and walked only one; Craig Mattson got his 12th save for the Surf, who finished the first half with a recoprd of 28-34.

Jose Velasquez homered for the Surf in the fifth inning to tie the game at one after Oreste Marrero had homered to give Bridegport a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. The Surf are now off until July 12 when the they begin the second half of the season against Pennsylvania at 7:05 p.m. A fireworks show will follow the game.
