ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (July 8, 2002) – A wild pitch by Greg McCarthy (1-2) in the seventh inning plated Pito Ramirez for the go-ahead run as the Atlantic City Surf (28-34) edged the Bridgeport Bluefish (36-27), 2-1, Monday afternoon at the Sandcastle in the last game of the first half.

Ramirez, who walked, advanced to third base on a double by Atlantic City's Maleke Fowler.

The Surf received a solid start from southpaw Jim Crowell (4-3) who tossed seven innings and allowed one run on just four hits while striking out four and walking one.

Craig Mattson pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save of the season. Bluefish starter Gil Perez pitched five innings and allowed one run on five hits while striking out three and walking one.

Oreste Marrero was 2-4 with a solo home run and a stolen base for Bridgeport.

Jose Velasquez homered for the Surf.

NOTE TO MEDIA: With Monday's crowd, the Surf have broken the Sandcastle record for attendance during a six-game period (20,946 from 7/3/02-7/8/02). The record eclipses the mark set last season of 20,931 during the week of 7/17/01. This year's record-breaking week featured the largest crowd in Surf history with 6,780 on July 4 and a solid crowd of 5,658 for fireworks on July 3.
