Chad Gambill's RBI double in the seventh inning lifted the Atlantic City Surf (1-1) over the Pennsylvania Road Warriors (1-1), 5-4, Saturday evening at the Sandcastle.
With Atlantic City down 3-2 in the seventh, Keith Gordon's RBI single scored Pete Incaviglia, who walked, to tie the contest at 3-3. The next batter Gambill laced a double into left field that plated Jose Velasquez, who singled, and moved Gordon to third. Garry Maddox hit a shallow fly ball to centerfield, but Gordon tagged up and beat the throw home to give the Surf a 5-3 lead.
Atlantic City's Mark Rutherford (2-3) picked up the victory, pitching one and a third innings and allowing no runs while striking out two. Eduardo Pena (2-1) picked up the loss for the Road Warriors. Surf closer Craig Mattson pitched one and one-third innings for his 13th save of the season. Surf starter Maximo Nunez tossed six innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out four and walking one.
Road Warriors hurler Tim Kester also pitched six innings, allowing two runs on just three hits while striking out three and walking one. Ben Craig went 3-3 with two RBI for the Road Warriors. Pat Burns and Ricardo Montas added two hits apiece for Pennsylvania.
The Surf conclude their series with the Road Warriors on Sunday, July 14, at 7:05 p.m., at the Sandcastle.
Vic Gutierrez had two hits and an RBI for the Surf.
