San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

SAN DIEGO - Make it three in a row for the San Diego Surf Dawgs, they doubled up the Chico Outlaws 12-6 in front of 1,703 at Tony Gwynn Stadium tonight. Matt Maloney continued his hot hitting going 3-for-3 with five RBI, a home run and a double. Steve Smyth (2-0) picked up his second win in two starts with San Diego with a stellar performance - seven innings, three runs (all unearned) on six hits with nine strikeouts. The 12 runs tied a season high for the Surf Dawgs and in their last four victories they have scored a total of 45 runs.

Maloney got the ball rolling in the bottom of the second after Nick Guerra drew a leadoff walk by taking Outlaws starting pitcher Nick Singleton (4-4) deep to left field to give San Diego a 2-0 lead. It was Maloney's fourth home run of the season.

The Dawgs would proceed to score in the next three innings to blow open the game. In the third, Seth Pietsch, 4-for-5 with three runs scored, started things with a single. He would move over to second on a wild pitch. Guerra singled up the middle and there were runners on the corners. Richard Quihuis-Bell would hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Pietsch and after three the Surf Dawgs led 3-0.

Chico would tie the game in the top of the fourth. After Mike Mallory struck out to start the inning, Craig Kuzmic singled. Lino Garcia then reached base on an error by Pietsch to put two on with Jesse Kovacs at the plate. Kovacs would single in both Kuzmic and Garcia and suddenly it was 3-2. Kovacs, who moved to second on the throw home, scored two batters later when Jason Matteucci singled him in to tie the game.

Things would unravel for Chico in the bottom half of the fourth. Singleton hit second baseman Adam Mandel to start things off. He then allowed Johnny Day and Pietsch to single back-to-back to load the bases. Scott Goodman drew a bases-loaded walk and San Diego took the lead for good 4-3. With the bases still loaded, Guerra singled in Day and it was 5-3. The Guerra single would chase Singleton and Chris Searle was brought in to try and shut down the Dawgs. Maloney greeted Searle with a double to score both Goodman and Pietsch and the Surf Dawgs led 7-3. Searle would then be called for a balk during Richard Quihuis-Bell's at bat and Nick Guerra would score. With the Dawgs up 8-3, Victor Roldan singled to score Maloney. The Surf Dawgs plated six runs during the fourth inning to make it 9-3 and would never look back.

San Diego scored one more in the fifth, and two more in the seventh. Chico scored three in the eighth but that would be all. Nick Guerra was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored for San Diego.

San Diego (15-21) will look to make Chico (19-17) their first sweep victim of the 2006 season tomorrow afternoon. Chris George (0-4) will be looking for his first victory for San Diego and Brian Kroll (2-3) will throw for Chico. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. PT.
