Yuma Avoids Sweep

The Flyers bid for the first sweep in franchise history was dashed as the Yuma Scorpions won 7-5 at Goodwin Field. Yuma starter Steve Dunham and Fullerton starter Jeremy Sugarman threw quality outings. Dunham finished the 8th inning and ended up getting the victory.

Sugarman pitched 7.1 innings giving up seven hits and two earned runs. He did not receive a decision.

Kalen Norton's sacrifice fly broke a 3-3 tie in the 9th inning. Juan Lebron, Billy Malone and Billy Kovatch tacked on RBIs to extend the lead to 7-3.

Matt Ferrara struck out as the tying run in a 7-5 game to end it in the bottom of the 9th off of Walt Nolen.

Peanut Williams cracked his league leading 12th homerun in the 7th inning to make the score 3-2 Yuma. Peanut also doubled and scored in the 2nd inning.

Rick Elder scored to tie the game at 3-3 on a pass ball. Yuma made five errors in the game.

Yuma catcher Steve Smith, who was hitting .098 coming into the game, delivered an RBI single in the 5th inning for Yuma's first lead. Smith scored on Henry Calderon's RBI double to push the lead to 3-1.

The Flyers fell back into 5th place and their record dropped to 16-20. Yuma moved to 17-20.

The Flyers will host Jose Canseco and the Long Beach Armada for four games Monday through Thursday. Todd Gelatka will start Monday at 7:05 pm.
