San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

SAN DIEGO - Two solo home runs by a couple of the hottest Surf Dawgs were the only bright spot during a hot summer day game at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Victor Roldan and Matt Maloney, who homered for the second straight game and is now 13-for-23 (a .565 clip) in his last six games, went deep. The 22-year old Roldan hit his first professional homerun. But a six-run third inning, that saw the potential third out in the form of a strikeout get away from catcher Kevin Ciarrachi, was the downfall for the Surf Dawgs on this day.

In that fateful third, after a leadoff single to shortstop Jesse Kovacs, Chris George (0-5) got Jason Matteucci to fly out and Kovacs was caught stealing for the second out. What looked like a inning where George would face the minimum number of batters after a strikeout by Bobby Gandolfo turned disastrous as Gandolfo reached on the error by Ciarrachi. George had another chance to escape the inning, but Desi Wilson reached on an error by Johnny Day. Then it got ugly. Four hits, an error, and two wild pitches led to the six unearned runs.

Brian Kroll (3-3) of the Chico Outlaws was spectacular, going eight innings, giving up seven hits allowing one run and striking out six.

Chris George, who went five and two thirds innings giving up eight runs (only two earned), deserved much better. But the Surf Dawgs still took 2-of-3 from the Outlaws (20-17) making it difficult for Chico to catch the Reno Silver Sox (23-13) in the hunt for the best record in the first half and an automatic berth in the playoffs with only six games left for both clubs.

The Surf Dawgs have the day off tomorrow before they take on these same Outlaws back in Chico on Tuesday night. The Surf Dawgs are not home again until July 20th when they hope to go on their second half surge to secure the other playoff spot and defend their Golden Baseball League Championship.
