Chico Outlaws News Release
SAN DIEGO, CA - The San Diego Surf Dawgs used a 17-hit attack and a six run 4th inning to down the Chico Outlaws 12-6 Saturday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the San Diego State campus. The loss was the Outlaws second straight on the team's current road trip and the fourth consecutive time they came up short against San Diego.
Matt Maloney - who would finish the night with five runs batted in - got San Diego started when he bombed a two-run homer off Outlaws starter Nick Singleton in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The Surf Dawgs made it 3-0 with a run in the bottom of the 3rd - Seth Pietsch scoring on a Richard Quihuis-Bell sacrifice fly. Chico tied the game in the top of the 4th when Jesse Kovacs singled home Craig Kuzmic and Lino Garcia, then scored on an RBI single by Jason Matteucci. But San Diego broke open the contest and chased Singleton in the bottom of the 4th, sending 10 men to the plate - a bases loaded walk to Scott Goodman forced home the go-ahead run...Nick Guerra followed with an RBI single...Maloney doubled home two runs...Outlaws reliever Chris Searle balked Guerra home...then Victor Roldan capped off the rally with a base hit to left, knocking in Maloney to put the Surf Dawgs up 9-3.
Former big leaguer Steve Smyth kept Chico's offense in check for the next three innings...meanwhile, San Diego continued to pad their lead, scoring a run in the 5th off Searle and two more in the 7th off Grant Gregg (making his first-ever relief appearance in an Outlaws uniform). Chico made the score a little more respectable with three runs in the 8th off Surf Dawgs reliever Brent Pourciau - Garcia doubled home Desi Wilson and Todd Gossage and scored on a Kovacs single to cut the deficit to 12-6 - but that would be as close as the Outlaws would get as they dropped their third game in five tries on the current road trip.
Smyth (2-0) did not allow an earned run and struck out nine in seven innings of work to earn the victory, with Singleton (4-4) taking the loss. Wilson and Kovacs had two hits apiece to lead the Outlaws...Pietsch had four hits, with Guerra and Maloney adding three each to pace the Surf Dawgs. Saturday's loss dropped Chico to 19-17 on the year, while San Diego improved their season record to 15-21. The series concludes Sunday with right-hander Brian Kroll (2-3) on the mound for Chico...San Diego will counter with righty Chris George (0-4). Game time is set for 1:05pm.
