Surf Dawgs hold on to top Flyers

August 13, 2006 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

In the finale of their three-game series with the Fullerton Flyers, the San Diego Surf Dawgs hung on to defeat the Flyers 7-6 giving the Dawgs a two-out-of-three series win. Aaron Wilson (2-2) picked up the victory and struck out a season-high six batters while Todd Gelatka (3-5) suffered the loss for Fullerton.

The Surf Dawgs (12-13) got on the board first with a Scott Goodman sacrifice fly after getting runners on the corners with no outs. The Flyers (17-10) countered with two in the fourth on timely RBI singles.

In the fourth, Nick Guerra reached on a error by the second baseman to start the rally. Gelatka then walked Matt Maloney and hit Derrick Pyles in the head to load the bases. Adam Mandel, who marked his new San Diego Hall of Champions July Breitbard Player of the Month honor by going 3-for-5 with 3 RBI, singled to left to drive in two. This would give the Surf Dawgs 3-2 lead.

Fullerton would tie the game on a throwing error by pitcher Aaron Wilson in the sixth inning when with men on second and first with no out, Hector Zamora tried to sacrifice the runners over. Wilson tried to get Trevor Hall going into third but threw it up the left field line. Hall came into score, but the situation was grave with a man on second and third with no outs. Wilson showed the grit that made him so dominant before his injury earlier this year, coming back and striking out Joe Frazee, Bernard Dennis, and Garry Templeton II.

This pumped up the Surf Dawgs offense, which came through for four runs in the bottom half of the sixth. A Guerra single to center started it off. Matt Maloney sacrificed him over. After a hit by pitch, Guerra stole third. Two RBI singles by Victor Roldan and Adam Mandel followed and the run scoring was on. Roldan would eventually come across on a passed ball and Mandel came around on a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 7-3.

Wilson gave way in the top seventh to EJ Shanks after walking Jesse Schmidt. Wilson went six and a third innings, his longest start of the season, giving up seven hits and 4 runs (2 earned).Trevor Hall would greet Shanks with a single and then Rich Pohle hit a shot that just cleared the right field wall. All of a sudden, the scored was 7-6 Dawgs. But then Shanks settled down to retired the side.

The bullpen held the close lead. Ryan Fox and Chris George slammed the door shut; George picked up his second save. Fullerton left 12 runners on base on the evening as the four Dawgs pitchers worked in and out of trouble.

The two teams now move to Fullerton to wrap up the season series. The Surf Dawgs need to continue to win if they hope to make a run to the championship game. The Surf Dawgs return home after the series to face first half winner Reno on Friday at Tony Gwynn Stadium at 7 PT.
