San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

It was all Fullerton from the get-go tonight at Tony Gwynn Stadium as the Flyers defeated the Surf Dawgs 7-2 in the middle game of a three-game series. Starting pitcher Chris Gale (1-5) took the loss for San Diego while his counterpart Chris Jakubauskas (7-1) picked up his seventh victory of the year for Fullerton.

Nick Guerra, who was hitting .412 over his last four games coming into tonight's game, continued to stay hot by going 3-for-4 tonight. Adam Mandel was the only other Surf Dawg to collect multiple hits; he was 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored.

In the first, Gale got the first two batters and was ahead of Jesse Schmidt 0-2 but then he ended up walking Schmidt. Peanut Williams would follow with a hot single to short to put runners at first and second with two out. Rich Pohle, 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored, singled in Schmidt to make it 1-0.

The Flyers would open it up in the second when Hector Zamora led off with a single and Buddy Morales reached on a throwing error by Victor Roldan. Gabe Mayorga laid down a textbook sacrifice bunt to move the runners over for Garry Templeton II. Templeton would ground out but a run would cross the plate; 2-0 Flyers. Bret LeVier would double to score the third run for the Flyers.

The Dawgs would cut the lead to two in the bottom of the third when Adam Mandel singled to start the inning. After Jakubauskas balked, Tony Garcia grounded out to move Mandel to third. Scott Goodman also grounded out but Mandel would score to make it 3-1 Flyers.

Gale would get through the third, fourth, and fifth unscathed but would run into trouble in the sixth. Fullerton would tack on three more off of Gale, who was chased in the middle of the inning.

Chris George pitched effectively in relief, throwing 2 2/3 innings allowing three hits and striking out three.

One more run in the seventh pulled San Diego within four but Fullerton answered right back in the ninth with another run.

The series will conclude tomorrow with Todd Gelatka (3-4) throwing for Fullerton (17-9) and Aaron Wilson (1-2) will go for San Diego (11-13). First pitch is at 5:05 p.m. PT. Adam Mandel will be presented with the Breitbard Player of the Month award prior to the game.
