Chico Outlaws News Release
LONG BEACH, CA - Former Baltimore Orioles farmhand Trevor Caughey, asked by Chico to make a spot start Saturday, did not disappoint...stepping in for Nick Singleton, Caughey scattered three hits over six shutout innings and the Outlaws backed his performance with a 14-hit attack to hand Long Beach its second straight shutout defeat...Chico posting an 11-0 victory in front of over 2,000 fans at Blair Field.
The Outlaws jumped out to an early lead by plating three runs off Long Beach starter Ryan Claypool in the 2nd inning - with runners at second and third, Bobby Gandolfo sent a grounder wide of first...Jeff LaRue had the ball slide under his glove allowing Todd Gossage and Lino Garcia to score. Gandolfo then stole second (one of five steals Chico would collect on the night) and came home on Desi Wilson's single to center. The Outlaws extended their lead in the 3rd inning - RBI singles by Jason Van Meetren and Whit Pierce put Chico up 5-0. Caughey, meanwhile, easily maneuvered his way through the Armada lineup, retiring seven in a row at one point and not allowing a Long Beach runner past second base.
Chico chased Claypool in the 6th and went up 6-0 when Jason Matteucci scored on Wilson's second RBI single of the night. Caughey handed the ball over to Outlaws reliever Robert Anaya, who tossed a pair of scoreless innings...Chico then put the game away in the 9th, scoring five times off Long Beach reliever Nathan Pudewell - Pierce's bases-loaded single plated Mike Mallory and Craig Kuzmic...Matteucci followed with an RBI double...Gandolfo drove in Pierce with a base hit to left and Matteucci came home on a Jesse Kovacs groundout to make the score 11-0. Outlaws reliever A.J. Ampi sealed the deal, retiring Long Beach in order in the bottom of the 9th to give Chico its 11th win in 15 tries over the Armada this season.
Caughey (1-0) struck out four in earning his first professional victory as a starter since June 27, 2004...Claypool (4-4) was tagged with the loss. Wilson had three hits and Pierce went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Outlaws offense; Gandolfo, Kuzmic, Van Meetren and Matteucci all chipped in with two hits apiece. Saturday's win upped Chico's second half record to 18-7 (40-25 oveall); the Outlaws maintaining their game-and-a-half lead over Fullerton in the Golden Baseball League's second half race (the Flyers beat the San Diego Surf Dawgs Saturday 7-2)...Long Beach dropped to 8-18 in the second half and 30-36 on the year. The Outlaws go for the series sweep Sunday with right-hander Nick Singleton (5-1) on the mound...the Armada will counter with righty Justin Ramsey (6-3). Game time is set for 5:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller on Newstalk 1290 KPAY-AM or on the internet at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
