San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
SAN DIEGO - Baseball really is about those low scoring games, pitching duels that keep the game close and exciting. Justin Ottman (1-1) was brilliant on a Wednesday game in the sun and the Surf Dawgs ended a 3-7 10-game homestand with a 5-3 victory. Though they were outhit 11-10, the big blows came from Scott Goodman who is clearly finding his home run stroke in a hurry.
San Diego (5-9) scored first on Goodman's first home run of the game, a solo shot in the second inning. The Surf Dawgs proved that they key to winning is scoring first as they are 4-2 when they begin the scoring. Fullerton (6-7) bounced back with a run in the third.
In the fourth, the Surf Dawgs went big for three runs. Two of the runs came from a high drive off the bat of Goodman, who homered in his last bat the night before, going for his third home run in three at-bats. In the fifth, Seth Pietsch got into the act, going deep for a solo home run.
The real bright spot for the Surf Dawgs was the pitching staff. Justin Ottman gave up five hits in six strong innings, allowing a walk and striking out four. Brent Pourciau went two innings and gave up two earned runs, but both came on a fly ball that new acquisition Matt Maloney lost in the sun in the eighth inning. Those two runs would not be enough as Josh Rummonds converted his second save opportunity in two chances, staving off a man on third with only one out.
The Surf Dawgs capped off a 14-game stretch without a day off, but will finally have one tomorrow. They travel to Long Beach (5-7) on Friday night to take on the Armada who took 3-out-of-4 from the Dawgs in San Diego. San Diego returns home on Tuesday, June 20th to face the Chico Outlaws for the first time this season.
