Orange County Flyers News Release
SAN DIEGO - The Fullerton Flyers got on the board in the first inning and never looked back, beating San Diego 11-4. The Surf Dawgs had 10 hits on the evening, but stranded 11 runners on the bases.
Fullerton was able to get to San Diego starting pitcher Aaron Wilson (1-1) in the first inning. Gary Templeton II and Bret LeVier hit back-to-back singles to start the game. Rich Pohle then hit a single to drive in Templeton from third to make it 1-0 Flyers. LeVier, who advanced to third on the Pohle single, scored on a sacrifice fly by Peanut Williams and it was 2-0 Fullerton. Pohle stole second to move into scoring position and would score on a Nick Saunders single. After half an inning it was 3-0 Flyers.
Flyers starting pitcher Wes Faust (1-2) shut down the San Diego offense through the first three innings of play. In the meantime, Fullerton added three more (one in the third and two in the fourth) to make it 6-0.
San Diego would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out rally. Catcher Kevin Reinking and right fielder Matt Maloney both singled, putting runners on first and second with Johnny Day at the plate. Day would hit a triple down the right-field line to score Reinking and Maloney to make it 6-2 Flyers. Adam Mandel, who was 3-for-5, would single in Day to pull San Diego within three.
That is as close as San Diego would get because the Flyers went on to score five more runs over the last five innings. Scott Goodman would hit his third home run of the season in the ninth for San Diego.
The Dawgs (4-9) will look to end their 10-game homestand on a winning note tomorrow when they duel with the Flyers (6-6). It will be San Diego's first day game of the season with the first pitch coming at 1:05 p.m. PT.
