Chico Outlaws News Release

LONG BEACH, CA - In a game that went down in the GBL record books as the longest in league history, pitcher Ryan Claypool's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 16th inning plated Samone Peters with the winning run as the Long Beach Armada beat the Chico Outlaws 4-3 Tuesday night at Blair Field in Long Beach.

The game feature superb performances by both starting pitchers - Grant Gregg of the Outlaws threw 10 innings, allowing just one run on five hits, striking out seven and retiring the last 14 Long Beach batters he faced. Not to be outdone, the Armada's Andre Simpson went nine innings, giving up just one unearned run on six hits. Neither pitcher, though, would be involved in the decision.

Long Beach struck first with a run in the 4th - Adonis Harrison led off the inning with a bloop single to center, and when Outlaws outfielder Steve Booker overran the ball, Harrison took second on the error...he promptly stole third and came home on a Randall Shelley groundout. Simpson made the 1-0 lead stand up until the 8th when the Outlaws pulled even - Jason Van Meetren scoring from third on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Alex Froloff.

It stayed tied until the 13th, when Chico went up 3-1 on Craig Kuzmic's two-out, two-run double to right, driving in Booker and Desi Wilson. The Outlaws couldn't seal the deal, however, as Long Beach rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the 13th on two-out RBI singles by Shelley and Jeff LaRue. The game continued on until the bottom of the 16th - with Alex Perez on the mound for Chico, Peters doubled off the left field wall...then went to third on a base hit by Chris Klemm. Two batters later, Claypool came up to pinch-hit - the Armada had run out of position players - and lined the second pitch from Perez into right field to bring home the game-winning run and give Long Beach the record-setting marathon victory.

Brian Hoff (1-1), the second of three Armada pitchers, threw three innings of shutout relief to earn the victory...Perez (1-2) took the loss for the Outlaws. Kuzmic, Wilson, Van Meetren and Jesse Kovacs all had two hits as Chico collected a dozen on the night...Long Beach had 13 hits; LaRue leading the way with two singles and a double. Tuesday's extra-inning loss dropped the Outlaws to 6-7 on the year, while the Armada improved to 5-7 for the season. The rubber match of the three-game series is set for Wednesday, with right-hander Chris Searle (2-0) on the mound for Chico...Claypool (1-0) will get the start for Long Beach. Game time is 7:05pm.
