Surf collapse late

Atlantic City Surf News Release

Nashua, N.H.- The Atlantic City Surf squandered a five-run lead late in the game and fell to the Nashua Pride 8-6 in 12 innings Tuesday Night at Historic Holman Stadium.

The Surf used a two-run home run in the top of the first by LF Joe Burke off Nashua RHP Lance Stevens to go up 2-0. Atlantic City later added three more runs in the top of the fifth on a bases loaded, three-run double by DH Clyde Williams to make it 5-0.

Williams would be the last batter Stevens would face. The righty lasted just four and two thirds innings and allowed five runs (all earned) on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Atlantic City LHP Adam Cox tossed five innings of one run, one hit ball and added eight strikeouts and only two walks. Surf RHP Derek Duclos came on and was just as good. Duclos tossed three scoreless innings and gave up only three hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

The Surf turned it over to newly acquired closer Tony Pierce in the ninth. Coming in with a 6-1 lead, Pierce walked Nashua 1B Jerod Edmondson then got OF Edgar Clemente to pop out. 3B Mike Torres and DH Ismael Castro both drew walks and then SS Sandy Almonte cleared the bases with a grand slam to suddenly make it just a one-run deficit. Pierce responded by striking out pinch hitter Vinny Pennell but CF Ervin Alcantara reached on an error by AC RF Josh Burrus and made it to second. 2B Dorian Rojas's triple off Pierce plated Alcantara, knotting the game at six and sending it into extra innings.

Nashua would get a two-run home run from Edmondson in the bottom of the 12th off AC reliever Walker Whitley to cap the contest at 4 hours and 14 minutes. Whitley (1-4) threw an inning and a third and allowed the two runs on just one hit (Edmonson's homer) with no walks and one strikeout to take the loss.

Brett Palanski (2-3) was the pitcher of record with a scoreless top of the 12th to earn the win for Nashua.

The Surf and Pride play game four of their five-game series Wednesday Night at Historic Holman Stadium. RHP Rory Shortell (9-3) starts for the Surf. Nashua counters with RHP Isaac Burkett (3-5).
