CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Chattanooga Lookouts (26-26, 52-70) rode eight strong innings from Steve Smith to a 5-1 victory and a series win over the Jacksonville Suns (31-23, 67-57) on Friday night from AT&T Field.
Steve Smith (W, 2-0) picked up the victory by allowing a lone run (earned) on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts over the course of a new career-best eight innings.
Justin Nicolino (L, 11-4) took the loss for Jacksonville after giving up four runs (all earned) on nine hits without issuing a walk and striking out a season-high six batters in six innings of work.
Jheyson Manzueta surrendered one run (earned) on three hits with a pair of walks and two hit batsmen in his two innings of relief.
The Suns hopped on the scoreboard first on Friday night, grabbing one run in the top of the first. J.T. Realmuto drove in Brent Keys with a RBI single to give the Suns the early 1-0 lead after one half inning of play.
Jacksonville's advantage wouldn't stand for long, with the Lookouts countering with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. A Noel Cuevas RBI triple and a Daniel Mayora RBI groundout put Chattanooga ahead 2-1 after one inning in the books.
The Lookouts increased their lead to two by grabbing a run in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Liddi scored all the way from first base on Alberto Rosario's RBI double, putting Chattanooga in front by a 3-1 score after two innings.
That score held until the bottom of the sixth when the Lookouts added to their advantage by bringing one run across. Corey Seager's sacrifice fly made it a 4-1 Chattanooga lead with six innings in the book.
Chattanooga continued to further the gap, plating one run in the bottom of the seventh. Angel Sanchez drove in Jeremy Hazelbaker with a RBI single to give the Lookouts a 5-1 lead with seven innings complete.
