Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. - Chris Bassitt struck out eight Friday night for the Birmingham Barons (25-29, 54-71) as they defeated the Generals (25-29, 56-67) for the second straight day, 3-1. In the loss, Jackson leadoff hitter Leon Landry was 3-for-4 and scored Jackson's lone run in the first inning. The loss means Jackson falls into a tie with the Barons for fourth place in the division, three games behind the Tennessee Smokies with 16 games to go.
Jackson had its troubles with Birmingham starter Chris Bassitt (2-0, 0.75), who has struck out 19 batters over his last two starts. Dario Pizzano (2x4, 2B) had Jackson's other multi-hit game, but those were all five of the eight hits Jackson could muster on the night.
Jackson cracked the scoreboard first in the first inning as Landry led off with a double, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch to give his team the early 1-0 lead. Landry's swipe of third was his team-leading 25th on the year.
In the next half inning, the Barons came back as Chris Curley blasted a one out triple to right field. Michael Earley followed with a single to right that plated Curley and the game was tied 2-2.
The score remained tied until the sixth inning when Dan Wagner came up with a two-out base hit to bring home Curley with the second Birmingham run and they led 2-1 at that point.
Just an inning later the Barons increased their lead as Rangel Ravelo reached on a fielder's choice and Josh Richmond brought home the third run for a 3-1 Birmingham lead.
Bassitt allowed only one run on six hits in 7.0 innings. He kept Jackson off balance all night as he walked no one and struck out eight. Victor Sanchez (6-5, 3.88) suffered the loss, despite his seventh quality start of the season. He allowed two runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings of work. Nestor Molina came in for a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save of the season.
The Generals will look again to take the series from Birmingham on Saturday. Lefty Tyler Pike (3-2, 7.46) will make the start for Jackson as Birmingham will send Myles Jaye (3-10, 5.86) to the mound. Saturday is Elvis Night, with an Elvis themed Fireworks Extravaganza following the contest. The game will begin at 6:05 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
