Hagerstown Suns News Release

Lakewood, NJ: The Hagerstown Suns threw 7 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball on Thursday night in Lakewood, and won in shutout fashion, 5-0.

Deolis Guerra (6-7) went the first five innings of no-hit ball and got the win, however, he walked a season high six men which got his pitch count up and caused him to be pulled after those five innings. Brandon Nall kept the no-hitter intact until two outs in the eighth inning when Avelino Asprilla of Lakewood (36-17) hit a dribbler up the third base line about 25 feet from home plate. Nall pounced on it, and threw a hurried, off-balance throw to first that pulled Nick Evans off the bag, and allowed Asprilla to reach. The official scorer waited a good 20-30 seconds but found no way out from calling it a hit, which seemed like the correct call since Nall would have had to make an extraordinary effort to make the play. Clay Harris hit a triple in the ninth off of Kevin Tomasiewicz for the second hit of the game for Lakewood, and take the official scorer off the hook. Nall got a hold, but no save for Tomasiewicz.

The Suns (21-31) big offensive hero was Jonel Pacheco. He scored after a triple in the second inning, and then after a double in the fifth off of Lakewood starter Matt Maloney (14-8). Maloney got the loss even though was leading the league in wins, strikeouts and second in ERA coming in. He yielded the first run on a wild pitch. The second run Pacheco scored came on a suicide squeeze bunt by Rafael Arroyo, the second one of the year for the Suns. Arroyo added a two-run double the ninth to seal the win. The Suns stopped Lakewood's seven game win streak with the win.

RHP Jeramy Simmons goes for the Suns on Friday in the finale of the four game series. RHP Carlos Carrasco will start for the Blueclaws who are in first place by seven games with 18 games to go in the second half. The Suns go to West Virginia from Saturday through Thuesday for four games against the Power. Their next home game is a Feed Your Face Monday on August 28th at 7:05pm.
