Suns Score Four In Ninth In Come From Behind Win

Pittsfield Suns News Release

PITTSFIELD, MA - The Pittsfield Suns had a flare for the dramatic Wednesday evening, scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge the Nashua Silver Knights by a score of 4-3.

Nashua didn't waste any time adjusting to Wahconah Park for the first time this season. A leadoff walk to Brett Chappell to start the game would prove detrimental to Suns' starting pitcher Matt Van Riper when two batters later Ryan Sullivan would smash a two-run homer to put the Silver Knights to an early 2-0 lead.

Van Riper settled down and things were quiet for both teams until the top of the sixth. Nashua's Ryan Sullivan would reach first on a dropped third strike and advance to second and later third on back-to-back singles from Matt Foley and Erik Ostberg. Max Burt then hit a sacrifice to plate Sullivan extending the Silver Knight's lead to 3-0.

The Suns seemed to be unable to string together hits until the final frame of the game. After only accumulating five hits in eight innings Pittsfield sent seven batters to the plate in the decisive ninth inning. Hector Coscione would record the first single of the inning to put runner Hunter Bross into scoring position who had reached base on a fielder's choice. After a pitching substitution by Nashua, Bobby Kinne stepped to the plate and hit into a fielder's choice, putting runners on the corners with two outs. The pressure seemed to be too much for reliever Ryan Campbell who would throw three wild pitches allowing three runs to score before hot-hitting Ryan Olmo stepped into the box. Olmo, currently leading the FCBL in average (.500) rose to the challenge with a walk-off single that ricocheted off first basemen Ben Bengston's glove, to score the Suns fourth and final run in a 4-3 victory.

Chris Johnson earned the win and gave up only one hit while striking out two in the ninth. Nashua's Ryan Campbell would be charged with the loss.

The Suns are back at Wahconah Park on Friday, June 11 at 7:00 PM when they take on the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs for the second time this season. Fans will enjoy post-game FIREWORKS immediately following the game. Gates will open at 6:00 PM.
