Suns' rally falls a run short

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite capitalizing on four errors, the Suns fell short in a 7-6 loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts in front of 6,130 fans Saturday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The Lookouts committed four errors, including a three-run, three-base error in the third inning. After falling behind when Chattanooga scored four times in the third off Suns starter Will McCrotty, the Suns never re-tied the score.

McCrotty (1-4) gave up five earned runs on 11 hits and earned the loss. The Suns' three errors committed behind him did not affect the scoring. Andrew Beattie smashed a two-run home run nearly onto Georgia Street beyond the right center field wall, giving the Lookouts a 5-1 lead in the third. After two errors and a single loaded the bases, McCrotty worked out of the jam to keep the game relatively close.

Suns reliever Luis Pineda gave up two runs in the sixth inning, allowing the Lookouts (50-61 overall, 18-23 second half) to pad the lead to 7-4.

Off reliever Brett Gray who had retired the first eight hitters he faced, the Suns (50-60, 19-22) scored a run on a successive walk, single and a run-scoring double by Tony Socarras. With runners at second and third, pinch-hitter Tarrik Brock flied out to center field.

In the ninth, facing Lookouts closer and former Suns hurler Kris Keller, Shane Victorino led off the inning drawing a walk. Following a one-out Reggie Abercrombie walk, Victorino scored on a bad-hop RBI single by Derek Michaelis. Abercrombie moved to third representing the tying run and Michaelis was the winning run at first. But Nick Theodorou and Brennan King struck out in succession allowing Keller to earn his five save of the season. The Suns struck out 15 times against Lookouts pitching.

Lookouts starter Bobby Bevel (2-0) earned the victory, striking out 10 and allowing four unearned runs over five innings. He was named Chattanooga's starter hours before game time. He hadn't started a game in more than two years and hadn't pitched more than two innings this season with Colorado Springs, Louisville and the Lookouts.

Repko had two hits to lead the Suns, who had seven hits overall and gave up 15 hits to the Lookouts.

Left-hander Greg Miller makes his double-A debut for the Suns against Lookouts righty Dave Gil (1-2, 3.09) at 6:05 p.m. Sunday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

SUNS SPOTS: The Suns lost their 22nd one-run game Saturday. ...The start of the game was delayed 23 minutes for field preparations caused by an afternoon thunderstorm.
