Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â The Suns held off the Carolina Mudcats, 3-2, in front of 9,288 fans Saturday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
In a season-fastest one hour, 56 minutes, the Suns thwarted the Mudcats' bases loaded rally in the seventh and turned away another uprising in the ninth. Suns starter Heath Totten (7-9) won his fourth consecutive decision by allowing two hits through six innings.
In the seventh, though, Totten allowed four singles, which scored one run and loaded the bases with one out. Suns catcher Tony Socarras fielded a ball hit by Pat Magness 10 feet up the first base line and turned around to tag the plate just before Tommy Bost touched home. It recorded an out and set up Totten getting the next hitter, Jesus Medrano, to fly out.
In the ninth off Suns closer Jason Frasor, Chip Ambres hit a two-out solo home run to pull the Mudcats (56-39 overall, 14-13 second half) to within a run. But Frasor earned his ninth save in as many opportunities by getting Ryan Jorgensen to ground out to first.
The Suns (47-50, 16-12) scored early off Mudcats starter Nic Ungs. Brennan King's two-out, two-run single deflected off Carolina third baseman Drew Niles' glove, giving Jacksonville a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jason Repko's sacrifice fly in the sixth padded the Suns' lead off Ungs (0-2) who lost in his second double-A start.
Repko and Ambres led all hitters with two hits.
Right-hander Joel Hanrahan (9-4, 2.55 ERA) is scheduled to face Mudcats righty Randy Messenger (4-6, 5.61) at 6:05 p.m. Sunday at the Baseball Grounds.
