Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (3-2) brought their stellar early-season starting pitching back to Municipal Stadium with them for their home opener against Delmarva (4-1) last night, but the Shorebirds pushed ahead late for a 2-1 victory.
Elvin Polanco delivered a go-ahead double in the top of the eighth inning that plated Ron Welty for the third and final run of the game for either team. Both teams received excellent efforts from their starting pitchers, although neither factored into the final decision. Marcos Frias hurled five and two-thirds innings of one-run ball for Hagerstown, while Delmarva's Oliver Drake pitched six innings, also allowing just a single run.
The game was scoreless through three innings until Polanco drove in his first of two runs on the game with a single up the middle that scored Greg Miclat. The Suns answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth, with first baseman Ronnie Labrie driving in his third run of the season with a single to left field that drove home second baseman Steve Lombardozzi.
Frias kept the Shorebirds' bats silent in the fifth inning and into the sixth, closing out a three-hit, six-strikeout effort. After one full turn through the Hagerstown rotation, none of the Suns' five starters have allowed more than two earned runs.
Right-handed reliever Kevin Light (0-1) replaced Frias in the sixth, and took the loss in his second appearance of the season. Eddie Gamboa (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings to close out the game for Delmarva, preventing Hagerstown from mounting a final rally.
Labrie and right fielder Stephen Englund were the offensive leaders for the Suns, picking up two hits apiece.
