Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â Two third inning errors enabled the Suns to score all their runs in a 4-0 exhibition victory over the University of North Florida in front of 1,354 fans Tuesday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Delwyn Young's double and a groundout by James Loney garnered the only two RBI in the third. Joel Guzman reached on a potential inning-ending double play ball bobbled by shortstop Dennis Anderson, which scored Brian Sprout. Jon Weber scored on Loney's groundout. Guzman and Russell Martin came around on the hit by Young, who was thrown out trying to reach third base on an errant throw by center fielder Ryan Howard.
Eric Hull, who is scheduled to start the game Sunday vs. Birmingham, started and pitched three innings for Suns, striking out four and allowing one hit. Eric Stults followed, also fanning four in his three innings. Stults is set to pitch Monday vs. Huntsville as the team's fifth starter.
Richard Bartlett, Glenn Bott and Luis Gonzalez each pitched an inning for the Suns, who won their second consecutive exhibition against UNF. The trio combined to strike out eight Ospreys, who are 27-9 overall in collegiate play. UNF struck out 16 times.
Jonathan Hodach led UNF with two hits, including the team's lone extra base hit, a double off Hull in the second.
The Suns open Southern League play with a four-game series beginning 7:05 p.m. Thursday vs. the Birmingham Barons at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Right-hander Chad Billingsley (11-4, 2.53 ERA in 2004) is scheduled to face Barons lefty Jim Bullard (8-4, 3.47).
